  • PhD Council – Department of Mathematics

    All doctoral students at the Department of Mathematics, Stockholm University, are represented by the PhD Council.

    The council works to ensure that doctoral students have a strong voice in decisions that affect PhD education, working conditions, and the research environment at the department.
    All doctoral students registered at the Department of Mathematics are automatically represented by the council.

    • What is the PhD Council?

      The PhD Council represents all doctoral students at the Department of Mathematics at Stockholm University.

      The main purpose of the council is to promote doctoral student influence and ensure that PhD students are represented in departmental boards, committees, and other decision-making bodies that affect doctoral education and the research environment.

      The council also provides a forum where doctoral students can raise concerns, discuss issues related to their studies and working conditions, and contribute ideas for improving the doctoral environment at the department.

    • PhD student representation

      The PhD Council coordinates doctoral student representation in several boards, committees, and working groups at the Department of Mathematics.

      Doctoral student representatives participate in decision-making bodies where issues related to doctoral education, the research environment, and departmental governance are discussed.

      PhD students are currently represented in, for example:

      • the Department Board
      • admission committees for doctoral studies in Mathematics
      • admission committees for doctoral studies in Mathematical Statistics
      • admission committees for doctoral studies in Computational Mathematics
      • the grant committee for the Division of Mathematical Statistics

      In addition, doctoral students may participate in various departmental working groups and committees when issues relevant to doctoral education or the research environment are discussed.

      PhD student representatives are appointed through the PhD Council.

    • How to get involved

      All doctoral students at the Department of Mathematics are welcome to engage with the PhD Council and contribute to improving the doctoral environment at the department.

      There are several ways to get involved:

      • Attend council meetings – Meetings are open to all doctoral students and provide an opportunity to discuss issues related to doctoral education, working conditions, and the research environment.
      • Serve as a PhD student representative – Doctoral students are represented in several departmental boards, committees, and working groups. Serving as a representative is an opportunity to contribute directly to decision-making processes at the department.
      • Contact the PhD Council – If you have suggestions, concerns, or ideas for improving doctoral studies or the research environment, you are welcome to contact the council.


      Meetings and social activities

      The PhD Council organizes meetings during the academic year where doctoral students can discuss current issues, share information, and raise topics relevant to doctoral studies at the department.

      The council may also arrange social activities for doctoral students, such as informal gatherings, seminars, or other events that help strengthen the doctoral community at the department.
